“YOU HEROS OF ENGLAND WHO WISH TO HAVE A TRADE BE TRUE TO EACHOTHER AND BE NOT AFRAID”
The Luddites C. 1810
In the early 1800s a stock-frame knitter by the name of Ned Ludd was instructed to correct the mechanism of his machine. In being told to ‘square his needles’, Ludd ensued to destroy his machine. A movement grew around him as other workers from the knitting, weaving and farming trades followed his disruption. Between 1811-1812, the Luddite movement targeted labour-saving machinery. There has been no end point to the movement, the myth of King Ludd has persisted over time and set in motion an ongoing debate concerning the use of labour-saving machinery in the workplace. The Luddites are emblematic of the very essence of protest – an interval and intrusion to the capitalist time economy. They represent an historical moment of stoppage; as much actual as myth, as much historically specific as ideological.
